Hello Dr. Ali. Can you explain the difference between dry scalp and dandruff? How can one tell the difference between dry scalp and dandruff? Do we have to use different products to cure dry scalp and dandruff? How often should a person with dry scalp and dandruff wash their hair? For many years African American women have thought that they have to wash their hair less than a Caucasian women. I know that statement isn’t true, but what is a good hair regime for a person that has dry scalp and or dandruff? Also can products with sulfur cause the scalp to flake as well as poor diet and nutrition?
Generally, the sebaceous glands in African Descent individuals do not secret as much oils as the Caucasian descent individuals. Hence, the African descent scalp tends to be dry and needs less frequent shampooing, that is, once a week shampooing.
The dandruff or flakes on the scalp are generally due to excessive turn over of skin cells that start to build on the scalp and make the scalp breath less and produce itching. This condition can be called dandruff or dry itchy scalp condition. This condition can also reduce the hair growth as well.
The good news is that dry itchy scalp can be easyly managed by shampooing hair with Dandruff shampoos and dandruff control conditioners and spot itch lotions.
