Some general housekeeping...

It has come to my attention that folks using Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser haven't been able to view the entire blog properly. I am currently working to have the problem resolved; however, I would like to strongly encourage some of you to experiment with superior browsers such as Mozilla's "Firefox", Opera, Google's new browser "Chrome", and Apple's "Safari" browser. Thankfully, the hair care industry is full of competition so it is impossible for Avlon to rest on its laurels.

I recently updated several blog entries by posting the original PDFs of the articles, via SlideShare. Scroll down to the end of Recent Advances in Treating Excessively Curly Hair, Correlating Porosity and Tensile Strength of Chemically Modified Hair, Chemical Terms that YOU should know, Irritation Potential of Lye & No-Lye Relaxers, Study on physical properties of African American Hair, and Shelf Life and Storage of Salon Products to view the original PDF articles. You will have to view them in fullscreen mode.

With that said, I will be in Brasil for the next couple of weeks, so I will be a little busier than normal. Do not hesitate to comment or ask questions, and as always, I will do my best to respond to your questions or comments.

Lastly, I would like to leave you all with an interesting, somewhat unrelated, website that I recently stumbled upon called Wordle. It generates word clouds based on inputted text or URLs. The other day I inputted the URL of this site, www.dralisyed.com, and I got this:

wordle_dralisyed.jpg

It appears that I am in luck, and the word "hair" was the most prominent word on the main page at the time, so I must be blogging about the right subject.

Tchau obrigado

I like this word cloud so much I going to print a copy to become the cover of my "In The Lab With Dr. Syed" binder. Enjoy your trip (work/hobby).

Dear Dr. Syed, I am the daughter of Alexander and Sylvia Newman, the founders of LAB-LINE, Instruments, which had its home at 15th and Bloomingdale before you purchased the building and saved it from demolition.

I have wanted to contact you for a long time. However, the timing just didn’t seem to work until now. I was encourage to write you when I recently re-disovered some LAB-LINE newsletters. The synchronicity between Avalon and LAB-LINE, which manufactured laboratory instruments, is fascinating. As you, my father was a dreamer and a successful businessman. He was a mechanical engineer and had 26 patents in his name. To our delight, our son and his family are moving back to Chicago from Sao Paulo on Monday (Oct. 27th). My daughter-in-law is Brazilian and our son has been working and living in SP for 8 years.

It would be a pleasure to speak with you. I'd be happy share any information about LAB-LINE or the building's history that you might be interested in knowing.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Best regards,
Sheila Newman Glazov
P.S. I loved the idea of word clouds from Wordle. While in SP you might enjoy our son’s favorite restaurant, Barbacoa Itaim on Nue de Julho.

Ms Sheila,

It is great to hear from you. It would be fascinating to hear the history of the Lab-Line building your father built and owned. While we were purchasing the company, we were told some of the history of the building by the Boiler Room Engineer. To be honest, when I first saw the building, I did not like it from the outside. However, I decided to go in and was pleasantly surprised to see the befitting outlay of the building for Avlon's needs. We instantly became interested in the building and were able to purchase it. We are enjoying our new home at 15th Avenue and Bloomingdale. It's also interesting to know that my career mimicked your father's career as a scientist and as an entrepreneur. Feel free to visit us any time and give us more details of the history of the building and your father's career.

You will be surprised to know that my wife and I may have met you on Monday the 27th, in the early morning, around 5:30 am, at O'Hare terminal 5. We had just landed from Sao Paulo flight (UA 842), when you approached us to find out the details of the arriving Sao Paulo flight. Actually, we were sitting next to your son, daughter-in-law, and your granddaughter on the flight. What a coincidence.

Please stay in touch and if you find time, come and visit us.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ali N. Syed
