Overview of Syntonics

I wanted to re-introduce everyone to the new and improved Syntonics brand. The emphasis of Syntonics will be developing solutions for hairstylists that contain natural and botanical ingredients that will functionally work in synergy to maintain the integrity of your hair and scalp while providing excellent results.

Please note that we are not just dumping natural ingredients into our products like some other brands, just for the sake of marketing. Each ingredient has been tested for effectiveness and used in a specific concentration in order to repair the scalp and hair during and after the relaxing process.

In my slides I will cover the Syntonics Relaxer System, Maintenance Products, and Finishing Products. As always, feel free to ask any questions in the comments section.

Oi Dr. Syed, tudo bem?

I am a former classmate of yours from Sofia's class, and I am also a freelance writer. I remember the very informative presentation you gave during our last session, and I think this blog contains lots of valuable information about caring for ethnic hair. I would love to pitch a profile about you and/or your products to a few magazines and am wondering if that is something you'd be interested in being interviewed for in the future. For more information, you can contact me by e-mail.

Once again, great job with the blog! I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Tchau!

Hi Dr. Syed, unfortunately your Syntonics slide will not load. Is there any way you could re-post it or otherwise make it available for viewing? I am very interested in learning more about this line.

Thanks!

Sorry for that. I will ask my tech guys to take care of it as soon as possible.

Many thanks Dr. Syed! I saw my stylist today and received the relaxer service using the Mild for my fine hair. So far so good. I am very impressed with the feel and shine of my hair, as she used very little product to style. The ingredients of the Syntonics are extremely invigorating to the scalp and senses. In addition, I have never gone to the salon for my relaxers and NOT burned. Today was different, and I had scratched my scalp all week long up to my appointment (which I try not to do but it was beyond my control this time haha).

I do have a question for you. Regarding preserving the integrity of the scalp and hair when using Syntonics, how does this system compare to the other Avlon relaxers? Particularly the regular Affirm brand (I realize that Fiberguard is in its own class in this respect). Is the preservation of hair integrity significantly better due to the botanical ingredients? I guess I mean to say I am very interested in any studies you have done regarding this line.

Thanks so much as always!!

Oh, and one other question. Could you please discuss the concept of the "Liquid Crystal Molecular Conditioning" system? How does this work?

Thanks again.

The creams are made of oils, water, and emulsifiers. The emulsifiers are materials that make oil and water miscible for a certain limited period of time. Normally, oils are suspended in water or in other words, oil droplets are suspended in water. However, gravitational forces continue to pull water towards the bottom of the container/bottle/jar, leaving oil droplets to coalesce on to the surface. The product then separates into two phases and consumer is able to notice this undesirable phenomenon, as the product performance changes too. We as chemists call this an unstable product.

To make a oil and water cream stable for a longer period of time, we employ a technique called 'liquid crystals'. Here we use a unique combination of emulsifers that help disperse oil droplets into very fine micro droplets which are surrounded by these emulsifiers. In other words, these emulsifiers form an envelope around each micro droplet. When these micro size oil droplets come close to each other and try to touch one another, they are separated by this thin envelope of emulsifiers. This envelope of emulsifiers around each micro size oil droplet is called a Liquid Crystal.

Other advantages of the Liquid Crystals are that they're able to slash large oil droplets into extremely fine droplets which are in micron sizes. The creams or lotions that contain 'liquid crystals' are able to penetrate deeper into the hair or scalp/skin. In case of creams that contain active compounds, the actives are able to penetrate deeper into hair and scalp/skin and deliver more permanent results.

Examples of this technology can be found in Avlon's MoisturColor Permanent Colors which is the least damaging permanent color and is very effective in penetrating into the hair fiber cortex, compared to other hair dyes. Similarly, Avlon KeraCare Intensive Restorative Masque and other conditioners such as Affirm Positive Link, Affirm 5 n 1 Reconstructive Conditioner contain liquid crystals in them. We make all of our creams based upon this technology to deliver better product performance.

I hope this scientific jargon makes sense to you. Feel free to ask more questions.

Dr Syed

Hi Dr. Syed, I've successfully used the Affirm FiberGuard and Syntonics relaxer systems exclusively for over a year. I'm extremely happy with both and so are my clients.

However, a client recently reported an extremely itchy scalp in the days following her first Syntonics relaxer (Mild). She didn't report it to me until eight weeks later when she came in for a non-chemical service, as she thought the problem would resolve itself.

Upon examining her scalp, I observed a very fine white substance, very much like powdered sugar when I lifed it, and she had oiled her scalp a bit in the days before her service. I advised her that it didn't appear to be dandruff, and thought that it might be product build-up, but she explained that she had previously clarified her hair very well. I was at a loss. She later advised that the green tea ingredient may have caused an allergic reaction on her scalp as it had on her eye area with an eye cream at an earlier point in time. Have you come across such a side effect from the topical use of any product?

Hi:

Thank you for bringing this issue to my attention. I hadn't heard about people people being allergic to green tea extract. In the case of Syntonics, we use human consumable green tea and it is extracted in purified water by us. The green tea extract does not contain propylene glycol like some other green tea extracts may.

I would recommend that you use KeraCare Dry & Itchy Shampoo and Keracare Dry & Itchy Conditioner. I'm sure that the itchiness will go away allowing the scalp to clear up right away. If the problem persists, please get in touch with the Syntonics Consumer Hotline and they will assist you with any samples of the prescribed products needed. Also do not hesitate to communicate with me.

I will discuss this issue with our Dermatology Lab and see if there are other recommendations for you. Meanwhile, you may want to use FiberGuard or Affirm Relaxers on this client until this issue is resolved.

Hello Dr. Syed

I had a couple of questions regarding your Syntonics relaxer system and Fiberguard.

Is the fiber preservation the same or similar between these two lines or does Fiberguard still offer the most protection?

I also notice that fiberguard has the preservo protectant serum but syntonics does not have any sort of pre-relaxer conditioning treatment. Did you find it not to be needed given the formula of the syntonics relaxer or can the scalp base be applied lightly to the previously relaxed hair to protect it from any relaxer overlap and run off chemical exposure.

Also, with the fiberguard system having your fsc complex, I noticed your color treated products also contain this same complex. Is there any additional benefit to the strength of the hair to use those products as the weekly cleansing and conditioning choices instead of the hydrating shampoo and humecto conditioner or do the overall results per correct usage of the system as a whole not effect it enough to matter either way.

Thank you for your time
